maintenance dredging for their removal, but Mr. Boulton
has informed us that he considers a Priestman grab
machine will be sufficient to deal effectually therewith.
22.
The area sheltered by the proposed Harbour,
according to är. Boulton's Report, would be about 166
7
acras. We consider however, that unless the widths of
the North and South entrances are reduced, the average shelter provided, during on-shore typhoons, would not much exceed
120 acres.
hereinafter
Under any circumstances, for the reasons
given, the widths of the entrances should,
in our opinion, be curtailed.
23.
With regard to the sufficiency of the work as suggested, it should be kept in view that the "fetch"
of the sea falling on to the Breakwater, is of but
limited extent ? amounting only to seven to eight milea. although the wind is extremely heavy during typhoons, the
character of the waves falling on to the structure would
therefore be more in the nature of wind "lop" than of a
ground sea.
